Species Category: Shark

We have a huge variety of sharks around the Welsh coast ranging from the smaller lesser spotted dog fish and the starry smooth-hound to the second largest shark in the world, the basking shark. We also have the critically endangered angle shark. Due to the huge variety we have only included a couple of this page.
Porbeagle-shark

Porbeagle shark

The porbeagle shark can grow up to be around 2.5m in length and looks more like what we imagine sharks to look like. They feed mostly on bony fish. We have received several reports of porbeagles over the last few years.

Angel shark

Angel shark

Not much is known about the numbers of angle sharks in the waters around the Welsh coast but each year we get several reports of them, and we have been working with the angel shark project to help better understand this shark. Angel sharks can grow to be over 2m in length. They are an ambush shark similar in appearance to rays. They lay on the seabed waiting for its prey to swim by before it attacks.

Basking shark

Basking Shark

The basking shark was commonly seen in the waters off the Welsh coast. Unfortunately in the recent years we have received less reports of them. Basking sharks can grow up to 8m in length and are most likely seen in the summer months. Basking sharks are filter feeders.
